The Great American Music Hall is San Francisco’s oldest independent music venue as well as the city’s oldest and grandest nightclub.
The gorgeous setting of this legendary venue was built in 1907 as an infamous restaurant and high society meeting place called Blancos and has lived through many guises since, once owned by legendary fan dancer and burlesque pioneer Sally Rand, as well as being San Francisco’s first desegregated jazz club, Blanco’s Cotton Club, in the late 1940s.
In 1972 the historic building was taken over as The Great American Music Hall and has been in constant operation ever since.
From Duke Ellington to Dua Lipa, Etta James to Billie Eilish, Charles Mingus to Prince, the Great American Music Hall has been hosting the greatest in current & legendary musical artists for decades. Well known for its extraordinary residencies with the likes of Godspeed! You Black Emperor & Arcade Fire in recent years the venue was also the location for almost 50 performances by Van Morrison over several decades of much bootlegged historic performances.
