US Venue Spotlight – Berkeley, CA – The UC Theatre

The UC Theatre in Berkeley, California is a multi-tiered venue with a capacity of 1,400 that houses live music from an array of genres. First opened in 1917, the theatre originally ran as a cinema showing domestic and foreign films. In 2001,  then-owners, Landmark, closed the UC Theatre. Fifteen years later it re-opened and is now thriving as a concert venue.

Now operated by the non-profit organization Berkeley Music Group, the UC Theatre has a strong focus on community-based events and initiatives. On top of its shows, the venue is part of the Concert Career Pathways initiative, which helps people from a diverse range of backgrounds aged 17 – 25 progress in the live sector.

Artists who have performed at the UC Theatre include Yaeji, Ty Segall, Kamakazee, Johnny Marr, Ghostface Killah, Tinariwen, Frankie Cosmos, Jake Bugg, Lotus, Lupe Fiasco, Angus and Julia Stone, Death from Above, Rickie Lee Jones, Paul Weller and many more. For Independent Venue Week 2018, the venue hosted a sold-out show with Deafhaven.
