Schoolly D and The Fire on ‘Independent Venue Speak’

It’s a family affair! Join Philly hip-hop legend Schoolly D, his daughter Jordan, and Karen Saillant, owner of The Fire, as they discuss the stories that tie them together. Schoolly D reflects on late nights, DIY bathrooms, and musical exploration at The Fire on ‘Independent Venue Speak.’

Following his success in the 80s, Philly hip-hop legend Schoolly built his very own loft “Batcave” in the Northern Liberties neighborhood of Philadelphia; right around the corner from a venue now known as The Fire

Then known as The Philadelphia Bar & Grill, The Fire didn’t start promoting concerts until 1999, when owner, opera composer, and voice teacher Karen Saillant took the reins from her husband, Bernie. For Schoolly and his young daughter Jordan, The Fire quickly became a second home.

Join our guest host, Jordan Weaver, as she sits down with her dad Schoolly D and her former music teacher, The Fire owner Karen Saillant, as they explore the history of how this venue became a safe space for musical exploration.
