US Venue Spotlight – San Francisco, CA – Swedish American Hall

Swedish American Hall first opened in 1907 in San Francisco, California. From the moment you visit the venue, you will notice the stunning art deco feel. This space is all about music, food, drink, and community. Café du Nord—another member of the Independent Venue Week family—is located in the basement of Swedish American Hall.

Designed by Stockholm architect August Nordin, Swedish American Hall historically served as a Sweden – US meeting spot. It began operating as a music venue in 2015 but its old-world charm remains intact with stunning architecture and a grand ballroom in the venue. The only real alterations that have been made to the original building is the addition of a fire escape and altered ground floor storefronts.

The venue is a space for dance parties with a large main dance floor where classes and social dancing takes place.

Arthur Lee and Love’s last show took place at Swedish American Hall; other notable performers that have visited include Neil Young, The Zombies, Dave Davies (the Kinks), John Cale, J. Mascis, Frank Black, The Lumineers, Blink 182, St. Vincent, The Decembrists, Spoon, Iron and Wine, Rilo Kiley, Vincent Gallo, Mumford and Sons, Train, Cake, Sara Bareilles, Andrew W.K., Brian Jonestown Massacre, Girls, Alkaline Trio, and the comedian Scott Capurro.
